What is multiplication?

Can you count in groups of 2s, 3s, 5s or 10s?

Then you are already on your way to understanding multiplication.

Get a few objects ready.

Use things that are easy to group: pieces of coloured card, pompoms, crayons or Lego are all excellent choices.

Make a few equal groups. Move them around. Turn the arrangement. See what changes — and what stays the same.

And one more tool: the floating T button. Tap it whenever you want to check a times-table fact. Checking is part of learning.

Print the triangle sheet →

Colour the triangles, make equal groups, turn the page, halve groups and double them.

1 × 4 = 4

What do you notice?

Each group always has 4 dots. Only the number of groups changes.
